NAMI Signature Programs

We are excited about our plans to implement many of the NAMI Signature Education Programs and other NAMI Programs to meet our local community's mental health needs. With caregiver programs in English established, we are focusing on implementing NAMI programs with consumer participation and those to meet ethnic and cultural needs of our community.

IOOV (In Our Own Voice)

In Our Own Voice (IOOV) is a unique public education program developed by NAMI, in which two trained consumer speakers share compelling personal stories about living with mental illness and achieving recovery.

Throughout the IOOV presentation, audience members are encouraged to offer feedback and ask questions. Audience participation is an important aspect of IOOV because the more audience members become involved, the closer they come to understanding what it is like to live with a mental illness and stay in recovery.

Our first IOOV presentation was made at JGPH (John George Psychiatric Hospital) in San Leandro on June 7, 2012. In the month of June 2012, we made 7 IOOV presentations at JGPH acute care, one at Villa Fairmont sub-acute care and one at Fairmont Psychiatric Outpatient to 184 loved ones, caregivers and providers in a total of 9 presentations. This was accomplished with the support of NAMI Santa Clara County. For the most part, all evaluations were exceptional.

We are now making IOOV presentations 3 presentations per week on 3 different units at John George Psychiatric Hospital, weekly presentations at Telecare Heritage in Oakland and 2 presentations per week at Fremont Hospital in Fremont for a total of 6 presentation a week to patients, visitors and staff. In addition, monthly IOOV presentations are made at John George Psychiatric Hospital's new employee staff orientation on a monthly basis.

If interested in attending one of the IOOV presentations to new employees at John George, please check our website calendar and contact us for access instructions.
